Keeping it real

Earlier this week, I posted some photos of my first foray into ice-cream making. I'm a, what the French say, débutante, when it comes to photography; up until beginning of this year, I've only been shooting with a simple point-and-shoot camera.  The ice-cream photoshoot was one of the most frustrating one that I've ever come across since I started to get more serious with photography - food photography, actually - and started shooting with a digital SLR. It was a hot day, thus I had to work fast to prep, style, get the props ready and shoot all at the same time. Definitely a true test to my multi-tasking ability! I was completely dissatisfied with the shots.

I was trying to achieve a more gourmet look for the Burnt Sugar ice cream by using a darker background but somehow, despite the natural light, the pictures had a dullness to them. I don't believe in over-doing post-processing, an easy fix and widely-employed method in today's world of digital photography.
Now what do you think about these?
Exactly what I had envision in the first place - sexy sophistication. These photos have not been post-processed and were taken in natural light with add-on flash. They were taken by a talented, self-taught photographer who happens to be my wonderful husband.  I realize that I've not given him enough credit for all the photography work he has done for this blog and all the invaluable photography tips and tricks he had taught me. So thank you darling!  Looking forward to our many fantastic photoshoot adventures together in the future!
Today, everyone (and their grandmothers) is delving into digital photography; it's a great thing, really. But what sets a great photographer apart, in my opinion, is the vision and ability to execute to that vision. Good photography is not mere happenstance. It takes more than Photoshop (or other post-processing softwares out there) to achieve that perfect moment everytime!
